“Can we keep it? Maybe one more day? I could use it to go to the office tomorrow.”
“Why on earth would want to do that?”“It’s just so much fun to drive this car. It makes me feel like I am on top of the world. I can look into other people’s cars. Everyone yields to me.”
“No way. We are bringing that car back right now!”
And so last night, I had to bring back the monster truck that we rented to go to snowy Tahoe for our New Year’s break. Today, I drove to the office in our Yaris, forever changed by my experience with the big rig. Who would have thought that I would like such a big truck? You know how smug I am about the small car we have. I am proud of its ecologically responsible number of miles per gallon and of its low-profile appearance that comes in handy when you accidentally break the traffic laws. I unwittingly ran a red light recently and an SFPD police officer pulled me over and then let me go, probably endeared by the tiny Toyota with the “Love conquers hate” stickers and an American flag in rainbow format. I wouldn’t have been able to pull that off in the big SUV that we had rented for the long weekend. Still, it was lot of fun to drive my enormous truck.
(Where did we park the car, honey?)
But today, I returned to my usual place in the pecking order. I have been told that small dogs don’t know that they are small. We have all seen the little Pekingese that tries to chase away a Great Dane with menacing peeps. I guess I will be the small dog again going forward.

Here are some pictures of where our bad-ass toy brought us.
