Our relocation assistant Jim provided us with a laminated sheet that says “Top Ten Safety Tips for Expatriates”. It is important to “Adjust your style of dress so as to blend in as much as possible”. And it concluded with the following wise words: “When possible, “looking local” is one’s best all around strategy for avoiding insecurities or threats.”
We are blending in wonderfully! Actually, we have always been Americans at heart, with a slight European accent.
To boost the blending in process, we decided to eat out only in really local restaurants. Annelien conducted the on-line research (http://www.yelp.com/ and http://www.zagat.com/) and came up with some great suggestions.
Last Saturday, we went to a Korean BBQ place with our new friends. Our friendly waitress slid the BBQ set with burning coals in a hole in the middle of our table. Small innocent looking cups contained the meanest hot peppers you can imagine. And on Sunday, we went to a very authentic Mexican restaurant. For 20 dollars, we had a wonderful lunch of mouth-watering burritos and tacos. And we took a doggy bag home so we could enjoy the meal for the rest of the week.
